1881 – In Dodge City, Kansas, Bat Masterson fights his last gun battle
1889 – Silent film legend, Hollywood pioneer, co-founder of United Artists studio, actor, director, writer and producer, Charlie Chaplin is born in Walworth, London, England.
1915 – The ‘Chicago Automatic Machine & Tool Company’ invents and obtains the patent on the first patented jukebox.
1922 – Annie Oakley sets women’s record by breaking 100 clay targets in a row
1929 – New York Yankees become first MLB team to permanently feature numbers on backs of uniforms; numbers correspond to position in batting order
1943 – Swiss scientist Dr. Albert Hofmann discovers the psychedelic effects of LSD
1956 – 1st solar powered radios go on sale
1962 – Walter Cronkite begins anchoring CBS Evening News. Cronkite was a trusted voice in the United States. He reported on major world shaping events in his nineteen years behind the CBS anchor desk. Monumental stories including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the assassination of John F Kennedy, the moon landing, death of Elvis Presley and the assassination of John Lennon. He retired from the CBS Evening News on March 6, 1981 leaving Dan Rather to anchor the news through the remainder of the millennium. Cronkite passed away July 17, 2009 at the age of 93.
1963 – The Beatles perform on BBC TV for the first time on The 625 Show.
1964 – The Rolling Stones first album was released in the UK, it went to No.1 two weeks later and stayed on the chart for 40 weeks, with 11 weeks at No.1.
1965 – Actor, director, writer, producer and one of the two men in Two and a Half Men, Jon Cryer born in New York, New York.
1972 – Electric Light Orchestra makes its live debut at the Greyhound Club in Surrey, England. The group has seven top 10 hits, the biggest of which is “Don’t Bring Me Down” in 1979.
1974 – Queen play their first American concert at Denver’s Regis College.
1982 – former MMA fighter, actress, model and former ex-Rebel Shock Trooper Gina Carano born in Dallas, Texas.
1993 – David Lee Roth is busted by police after allegedly buying marijuana in New York’s Washington Square Park.
2007 – “Spider-Man 3” directed by Sam Raimi and starring Toby Maguire and Kristen Dunst premieres at the Tokyo Film Festival
2017 – A gathering of 662 participants at Manoir de Ban, Charlie Chaplin museum in Vevey, Switzerland sets the World Record for most Charlie Chaplin look alikes to commemorate his birthday in 1889.
