1805 – Lewis and Clark first sight the Rocky Mountains
1887 – Racetrack betting becomes legal in NY state
1896 – Dow Jones index begins with an average of 12 industrial stocks (closing is 40.94)
1897 – “Dracula” by Irish author Bram Stoker is published by Archibald Constable and Company in London
1923 – Inaugural 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race for cars starts through public roads around Le Mans, France; inaugural winners: André Lagache and René Léonard (France) for Chenard & Walcker
1942 – The Band’s Levon Helm is born in Marvell, Arkansas
1946 – US Patent filed for a hydrogen bomb
1948 – Stephanie Lynn Nicks is born in Phoenix, Arizona. Stephanie would go on to use “Stevie”, a shorted version of her name as she rises to fame as part of Fleetwood Mac and her subsequent success as a solo artist. Stevie Nicks will forever remain a Rock n Roll legend.
1967 – EMI releases “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” a few days early in the UK; it would go to number one for 15 weeks in the US and 22 weeks in the UK
1969 – John Lennon and Yoko Ono begin their Bed-In For Peace in Montreal, Quebec. It is the second Bed-In protest for the famous couple. It is in Montreal that the tracks for “Give Peace A Chance” are recorded. In the recording you can hear the bed mattress being used as a drum for the rhythm.
1974 – A 14 year old fan Bernadette Whelan is trampled and dies of “traumatic asphyxiation” during a David Cassidy concert in London, England after the crowd gets way out of hand. More than 1,000 people need medical treatment as a result of the hysteria
1975 – Glen Campbell releases “Rhinestone Cowboy”. Not only will the single, written by Larry Weiss become Campbell’s signature song but it goes on to win Billboard’s Song Of The Year for 1975. It is nominated for the Best Male Pop Performance award as well as Record of the Year at that year’s Grammy’s but loses out to the Captain and Tennille single “Love Will Keep Us Together”
1994 – Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley secretly wed in the Dominican Republic. Elvis’ daughter files for a divorce 20 months later citing irreconcilable differences.
