1789 – HMS Bounty mutiny survivors including Captain William Bligh and 18 others reach Timor after a nearly 7,400 km (4,600 mi) journey in an open boat.
1872 – Trade unions are legalized in Canada.
1937 – U.S. House of Representatives passes the Marihuana Tax Act. Cannabis and Hemp would remain legal in the US until Richard Nixon outlawed the plants in 1970
1953 – Elvis Presley graduated from IC Hulmes High School in Memphis; his graduation photo shows him to have a split curl in the middle of his forehead, later to become his trademark.
1964 – 12-year-old Carol Dryden was discovered by railway workers packed in a tea chest on a station platform addressed to The Beatles.
1964 – Touring Australia The Beatles arrived in Melbourne and were greeted at the airport by over 5,000 fans. Another 20,000 fans lined the route from the airport to the hotel, army and navy units were brought in to help control the crowds, cars were crushed, hundreds of girls fainted and over 50 people were admitted to hospital with broken bones.
1967 – British film “To Sir, with Love” directed by James Clavell and starring Sidney Poitier is 1st released in the US
1968 – Pink Floyd appeared at the Midsummer Ball, University College London, Bloomsbury, England.
1969 – John Lennon and Yoko Ono appear on the David Frost Show on the BBC
1970 – Derek and the Dominoes played their first gig when they appeared at London’s Lyceum.
1980 – The movie “Roadie,” starring Meat Loaf, debuts. The soundtrack also features Blondie’s Deborah Harry, Pat Benatar, Cheap Trick, Joe Ely, Alice Cooper, Styx, Teddy Pendergrass, Roy Orbison and Emmylou Harris, Jerry Lee Lewis and Asleep At the Wheel.
1986 – Three fans died during an Ozzy Osbourne gig at Long Beach Arena, California after falling from a balcony.
1986 – The Mindbender derails and kills three riders at the Fantasyland (known today as Galaxyland) indoor amusement park in Edmonton, Alberta.
1989 – Hollywood legend Zsa Zsa Gabor arrested for slapping Beverly Hills motorcycle patrolman
1991 – “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” opens directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman
1994 – The 1994 Vancouver Stanley Cup riot occurs after the New York Rangers win the Stanley Cup from Vancouver, causing an estimated C$1.1 million, leading to 200 arrests and injuries.
1996 – “The Cable Guy” starring Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick opens in theatres. Jim Carrey became the first actor to be paid $20 million for a movie role when he took the role of the title character in the Ben Stilkler directed dark comedy. The film would go on to collect $102 million at the box office against a $47 million total budget, including Carrey’s record setting salary.
2002 – Mick Jagger became a Sir when he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
2002 – Near-Earth asteroid 2002 MN misses the Earth by 75,000 miles (121,000 km), about one-third of the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
